The Dancing Boards

We are breaking out our newest collection of handcrafted cutting and serving boards in honor of International Women’s Day (March 8). The collection is inspired by Frida Kahlo, whose bold personality and art were playful yet strong. Similarly, these boards are made to be durable and resist the everyday wear and tear experienced by any cutting board, but with a special addition that adds a measure of playfulness: tassels.

Anything you choose for your kitchen should be made to last. Therefore, our carpenters chose conacaste wood for this collection because it is known for its durability. (Fun aside: Did you know that “conacaste” is referred to as “elephant’s ear wood” in many places? This is due to its unique pod pattern, as each pod resembles the shape of an ear. The word “conacaste” itself is derived from two Mayan Nahuatl words that combined mean “ear tree.”)

However, the wood is not only highly functional; its natural tones vary between light and medium brown, making it a beautiful wood. Our woodworkers have finished the boards with mineral oil in order to preserve the natural, warm tones for which conacaste is famous. Additionally, conacaste trees are sustainably grown, making these boards eco-friendly.

The collection is versatile: one or all of the three boards can be used for both preparing and serving food and drinks, or as decoration in your kitchen. Use one side to cut and the other side to serve! The unique addition of a tassel make the serving boards particularly well-suited for a dinner party, as they are decorative by design. Currently, the collection that we are offering have black tassels that are not only fun but elegant as well. If desired, other colors can be used for the tassels to customize your boards.

We are offering these boards in three different sizes! Each can be used in a different way –  you could use the small board to serve cheese and crackers; the long board to serve slices of baguette, the ingredients for a mixed drink, or vegetables and dip; and the large board could even be used as a tray to serve various drinks to your guests. Regardless of how you use the boards, they will be one-of-a-kind due to being handcrafted and a beautiful addition to your kitchen.

Small board: 13 x 6.5 inches

Instructions for care:

  • We recommend applying mineral oil every two weeks to maintain your board in optimal condition.
  • Always keep wooden boards away from humid or extremely dry conditions, as extreme temperatures can cause wood to expand or contract, causing small cracks.
  • Try to ensure that you use the whole surface when cutting, so that it wears evenly.
  • Turn your board over periodically in order to use both sides and spread out the wear more evenly.
